The Busy Bird Tree - Bird Feeders

Attracting Winter Birds

Winter birds are coming. What do I feed them?

In colder areas most birds eat seed. They have to. There are no insects or flowers for the birds to feed on. The one seed I like most is the Black Oil Sunflower seed. It seems to attract the most varieties and the ones I like to watch. Blue Jays, Cardinals, Chickadees, gold & Purple Finch, Titmice and Nuthatches.

Where To Place Feeders?

The bird videos are actually the busy bird tree in my yard. By watching your feeders to see what your birds are eating and leaving, you can determine what kind of bird seed your winter birds like. I put my feeders at different levels. Some say not to put them on the ground because other critters will get into the seed. That is ok with me. I have noticed rabbit tracks at the feeder on the ground and I do not mind feeding them too.

Gold Finch Love Nyger

Finch like to eat thistle. Now that it is not available you can use Nyger. Gold Finch love Nyger.  You will want a to get a Nyger feeder, because Nyger is expensive and very light, it will just blow away if it is not in a feeder. Gold Finch are so beautiful. Once you hang your feeder give it a few days and they will come.

Birds Love Suet

Suet is a solid fat you get from beef and even venison. It is very cheap to buy and easy to make yourself. You can buy or make a hanger for the suet also. Suet is a favorite of the woodpecker.

Water Your Winter Birds

Because creeks and ponds freeze in the cold winter months you need to provide water to the birds. You can get bird baths that are heated and do not freeze. I use a small crock pot I got from the dollar store and attached a wooden dowel across the top for the birds to perch on.

Window View Bird House

Wow, look what I have found. A window view bird house. There is no back on it so you can watch the birds inside.

I love to watch birds, esp. in the summer when i have a lot of humming birds. The only tip i have is ,i feed them sugar water instead of the nector. They love it.

Cheers

Great hub, with the suet would you have to watch the salt content? Have you tried the large pine cone coated with peanut butter and rolled in bird seed then just hang in a good place to view?

Squirrels and birds will never starve around my home. lol I started out leaving out food on the table by my front door ( I have a covered porch). Well, the squirrels are so patient, sometimes there will be six of them out there taking turns but now that it's winter...interestingly, now the little birds are eating out there and they all eat off the same table. I never thought squirrels and birds would share but the squirrels come early and the birds come later in the day and they aren't bothered by each other.

Anyway...love this hub because it is so important to take care of our little friends...especially in the winter!

We always put out Black Sunflower Seed for the birdies. Backyard birdwatching rules! We went out, one year, chasing after a snow bunting that was reported to be in our area. Did not see it. Some time later, I saw one in my own little yard! What a thrill!

Dolores, I buy the mix. It has the black sunflower in it. It is cheaper and the birds go through so much.

Loved the video with the Amish wagon. It is so hard to get that on camera. Those horses looked huge. The birds were nice also. I live in the city and do not see much of this. Any chance youwill be doing more country hubs with pics

Gery, I will try. Thank you for the idea. Yes, you do miss alot living in the city, but you do have your own birds there too. Just look. Maybe set out some bird seed and see what it brings

...well thank you for looking after the birds - you are a gift to nature for doing so - and my two cats like to look after the birds too - lol lol - Little Miss Tiffy and Mister Gabriel often sit outside on the deck during the winter and watch their 'meals of prey' flying by and landing on trees and telephone wires ......well it's entertainment for the both of them and they get outside for some fresh air and their minds off the food dish inside for awhile ......I sincerely hope all is well with you and keep showing your birds the love in your heart .....

I use the Black Oil Sunflower seeds. The birds that come to visit my bird feeders can't get enough of them. Great job.
